Where is Salt Lake City

As the capital of Utah, Salt Lake City is also the most populated city in the state. It is located in the North of Utah and the Wasatch Mountains are located to the East. The Great Salt Lake, the largest saltwater lake in the Western Hemisphere, gives the city its name and is located not far from the center.

Salt Lake City is also part of the larger metro area which includes Ogden to the North and Provo to the South. The majority of the Utah population lives in this major urban area with the southern parts of the state that are less developed and populated.

How to get to Salt Lake City?

The majority of visitors to Salt Lake City arrive via airplane to the Salt Lake City International Airport. This major airport is conveniently located just 6 miles from the city center.

Interstate 15 runs north and south through the city and leads to Idaho and Nevada. I-80 goes East to West and will lead you to Nevada and Wyoming.

Although Salt Lake City is bordered by Colorado and Arizona, few major highways lead directly to these states. It is easiest to fly into Salt Lake City directly instead of driving from out of state.

When is the best time to visit Salt Lake City?

Although Salt Lake City is popular all year, it is especially beautiful in summer and winter. Spring brings rain and melting snow although there will be fewer tourists during this time.

September and October are the best time to visit because the weather is mild with highs in the mid-60s to the upper-70s.  The cooler temperatures make it possible to take advantage of outdoor activities without having to deal with rain and snow.

What to do in Salt Lake City?

Because of its proximity to the mountains, Salt Lake City is known for outdoor recreation, including skiing, snowboarding, and hiking. Utah is famous for its powder snow which is light and dry, making for wonderful skiing and snowboarding conditions.

The Great Salt Lake provides many recreation opportunities and nearby Antelope Island offers wildlife in the form of bison, antelope, bighorn sheep, and more. You can also fish, hike, cycle, boat, and camp nearby.

Is Salt Lake City family-friendly?

Salt Lake City is a very family-friendly city and has a very young population due to the high birth rate. The city has always valued children and families with large families being the norm.

This results in a city that is very family-oriented and there are many events and activities for children to enjoy.  In addition to an abundance of outdoor activities that are popular year-round, the city offers plenty to keep kids entertained.

Liberty Park is one of the most popular parks in the city, featuring 2 playgrounds, volleyball and bocce ball courts, a swimming pool, grills and plenty of areas to have a picnic. Near the park is the famous Tracy Aviary, an 80-acre park where families can explore birds from all over the world.

The Hogle Zoo and Loveland Living Planet Aquarium are also opportunities for young ones to engage with animals from all over the world. There are many educational programs, activities, and opportunities to see animals or watch them get fed.

At the Utah Natural History Museum, there are numerous exhibits and you can also attend events for families and children, including discovery classes and yoga. Discovery Gateway is a 60,000-square-foot children’s museum full of interactive exhibits and programs for kids.

Fun and thrills abound at the Lagoon amusement park located just north of the city. In addition to the usual rides, they also have wooden roller coasters and a water park.

Explore the city that hosted the 2002 Winter Olympics by visiting Olympic Cauldron Park or go skating on the Olympic Oval.  In the winter, the Gallivan Center is also an ice arena but turns into an amphitheater for live performances during the summer.

Wheeler Historic Farm is a working farm that is open year-round and provides children with an opportunity to learn about history.  There is no admission fee but activities, classes, camps, and events are an additional charge.
