Our Fave Spot in the Midwest: Noah’s Ark in the Wisconsin Dells

As the largest waterpark resort in the United States, Noah’s Ark in the Wisconsin Dells is like a city. Even knowing that you will be blown away at its size when you arrive. With 51 waterslides, a surfing simulator, and dozens of other attractions, this is the ultimate summer escape.

Those with a need for speed will love the Black Anaconda, the water theme park’s 30 MPH (!) roller coaster, while foodies will want to make a beeline for Wisconsin’s famous homegrown cheese curds.

When you are planning, do keep in mind that Noah’s Ark is an entirely outdoors waterpark, so it’s very much a weather dependent activity. The temperatures in the middle of winter can fall as low as 40 degrees BELOW zero– not exactly swimsuit weather!

While I wouldn’t recommend traveling across the country for a winter visit, Wisconsin Dells has a lot to offer in the winter. The entire region truly turns into a winter wonderland.

Waterparks in the Winter

If you really want to go on water rides during the colder months, you can check out the Wilderness Hotel and Golf Resort . This is the best waterpark resort for cold months because you can chill out tropical island style in the warm and sunny space. The property offers a range of villas, condos, and luxe cabins. It is a top pick for families because you unwind poolside amongst the palm trees (in Wisconsin!) or go screaming down a zip line.

Best Waterpark in the Mountains: Water World Colorado

One of the biggest waterparks in the country, Water World Colorado, has nearly 50 different attractions spread out over a massive 70-acre property. Best of all, it is just ten minutes outside of Denver so you can explore the city and get away for a break.

Tip- While you are in Colorado, be sure to explore the Mount Evans Scenic Byway. This nearly 30-mile road will bring you higher than 14,000 feet!

The crown jewels of this family water park are The Mile High Flyer, a crazy water roller coaster, and The Storm, an intense raft ride through a stormy night. For those looking for a more laid back experience, the waterpark rents out cabanas and bungalows where you can lounge while the family splashes around.

While Water World Colorado isn’t a waterpark resort, there are great options nearby. DoubleTree by Hilton Denver-Westminster has great deals for families visiting the waterpark. The Water World discount package from Hilton includes one night’s stay, fresh homemade chocolate chip cookie on arrival, four free Water World admission tickets, shuttle service to and from Water World, and a hot buffet breakfast in the morning. What more could you ask for?

Make a Splash in the South: Water Country USA

Regularly voted as one of the best waterparks in the United States, Water Country USA is a dream family escape. The largest water park in the Mid-Atlantic region, this place has a massive range of options for everyone. With live entertainment for all ages, water rides, shops, and restaurants in cool retro surf-themed property, this place will be an instant hit for the entire family.

Located just outside of historic Williamsburg, Virginia, this is home to the country’s first funnel-and-wave raft experience. In the famous Colossal Curl, you will experience total weightlessness as the raft flies through the funnel. And that’s far from the only attraction!

Once you are ready to get up and dry off, head over to the Busch Gardens (which is owned by the same company). Since 1990, this famous amusement park has been voted as the most beautiful theme park on the planet. Internationally inspired, you will find designs inspired by six different countries around the world. Walk the stunning streets of Paris; explore a traditional Scottish hamlet; and celebrate Oktoberfest in Germany– all while the kids are running from ride to ride!

Busch Gardens Williamsburg

Water Country USA is only open during the summer months, but Busch Gardens is open all year round– and it’s incredible in the winter! Go for a spooky Halloween and give the kids a trick-or-treat experience that they will never forget. Christmas is an especially good time to visit as well when the place is beautifully lit up.

While you won’t have the waterpark resort experience, you can get a magical holiday experience during December. With a whopping 10 million Christmas lights on display, Busch Gardens Williamsburg has the biggest light display on the continent

Planning tip- The temperatures in Williamsburg, Virginia, go from 20 degrees to nearly 100 degrees, so come prepared! Unlike other areas in the south, the weather gets pretty extreme here.

For a convenient location and comfortable stay, the Courtyard Williamsburg Busch Gardens Area is a top pick. It is one of the top-rated hotels near Water Country USA, and it is close to Busch Gardens.
