Who says that spring break is just for college kids? After a long winter, we could all use a bit of time to unwind. If the kids have some time off of school, make the most of it. While summer tends to be the peak season in terms of prices and crowds, spring is the perfect time to get away from it all. There are countless spring break ideas for families for every travel style.
From Wisconsin to Puerto Rico, let’s countdown the best spring break ideas for families.
Midwestern Spring Break Ideas for Families: Wisconsin Dells, WI
If you are from the Midwest, you definitely know this place! These guys have trademarked the phrase “waterpark capital of the world,” so you know they mean business. Places like Mt. Olympus Theme Park and Water Park Resort have put them on the map.
While the weather in Wisconsin can be hit or miss during the spring, there are plenty of indoor waterparks that will ensure your parade isn’t rained on. Great Wolf Lodge is one such option. On top of their impressive indoor waterpark, they have an active schedule of activities to keep the kids busy. It can be a one-stop-shop for your entire trip, or you can explore the other countless family-friendly things to do in Wisconsin Dells.

Outdoorsy Spring Break Ideas for Families: Hilton Head Island, SC
As Myrtle Beach becomes overcrowded with crazy spring break parties, families in the know head down to Hilton Head. Nestled between South Carolina and Georgia, just off the coast, this little island is famous for its beaches and golf courses.
If you are looking for family-friendly outdoorsy activities, this is the place for you. The bike paths span over 100 miles, and good old fashioned family fun like crabbing is always on the agenda.
You can stay a night or two in Savannah or Charleston, and I’d recommend at least a couple of nights just in Hilton Head Island.
The Sonesta Resort Hilton Head Island is a family-friendly dream hotel. Their Just Us Kids Club offers cool options for kids that will keep them engaged and learning. Open to children ages six to 12; you can opt for full-day or half-day care. Meals and snacks are provided so you can go out worry-free and enjoy your day. One of the things I loved the most about this hotel was the Saturday night “dive-in” movies. The whole family can chill in the pool while watching an all-ages flick.
Exotic Spring Break Ideas for Families: Puerto Rico
Looking for an exotic spot that is relatively close to home and doesn’t require a passport? Welcome to Puerto Rico! This gorgeous island in the Caribbean is safe, affordable, family-friendly. Back in full swing after the 2017 hurricane, this place is any beach-loving family’s dream come true. Explore the paths for walking and biking through Cabo Rojo Salt Flats and National Wildlife Refuge. Take in the sights of Old San Juan and the Castillo San Felipe del Morro. Snorkel in the crystal clear water and soak in the sun on sandy beaches.
Just outside El Yunque National Forest, you’ll find the Fajardo Inn. The ultimate kid-friendly resort, this Puerto Rican gem, will keep the kids busy with a waterslide, two swimming pools, tennis courts, mini-golf, basketball courts, and outdoor adventure galore. Sign the family up for zip-lining, diving, snorkeling, fishing, kayaking, sailing, or ATV tours. Or, just lie back and do nothing at all.
Alternatively, try the El Conquistador Resort in Fajardo, located on a 300-foot-cliff with fantastic ocean views, and also close to El Yunque Rain Forest.
Monumental Spring Break: Grand Canyon
An incredible one mile deep and 18 miles wide, the Grand Canyon is a true natural wonder. Whether you are nine or 90, this Northern Arizona icon will make your jaw drop. The Grand Canyon is absolutely an all-ages destination. In fact, bringing the kids to the Grand Canyon at different ages will create totally different experiences.
For babies and toddlers, bring a carrier. While a stroller is always good to have for long trips, it will get frustrating when you are walking in rocky areas. Even if you’re not planning a major hike, bring both, so you’ve got options.
The Rim trail is perfect for families, and it starts at Mather Point beside the Visitor Center. Almost all of it is paved, and there are beautiful vistas along the way. Rent a bike to explore the trails and Grand Canyon Village with the whole family. Most of the local rental options offer an option to rent a small bike trailer that’ll carry younger ones who aren’t ready to go solo.
For a little bit of luxury, try the family-friendly Grand Hotel at the Grand Canyon. It is about six miles from Mather Campground and seven miles from the Bright Angel Trail away.
