Easter week in Toledo is one of the biggest celebrations of devotion in the country. The region around Madrid is well known for its incredible ‘Semana Santa’ processions followed by many devoted Christians.
Semana Santa is one of the busiest weeks of the year, but it’s a perfect opportunity as well to experience this incredible event and explore the city.
The events in historic Toledo start on the Friday before Easter week on ‘Viernes de Dolores’. The ritual starts at eleven at night and the historical processions will take all week. The processions will be accompanied by music, art, and a colorful scene.
On holy Monday the central figure of the procession is ‘Cristo de la Esperanza’. During this parade, the gathered crowds will stay in total silence while the man carrying the floats bang their pitchforks in a mesmerizing rhythm. On all other days, there will be processions with a different appearance.
