Easter week in Seville, Spain is one of the biggest events in the region. The Andalucia region is well-known for its famous celebration of Easter.
The biggest event in Seville is Easter or ‘Semana Santa’ as they call it. This week will be filled with intense spiritual and visually pleasing events. More than sixty groups will take to the streets and play out the passion and death of Christ.
While the groups manifest the life of Christ people will sing a special flamenco song called ‘saeta’. Apart from the stunning sights and sounds, the streets will be filled with the smell of incense. When you roam the streets you will find yourself or surrounded by singing and music or with the silence of devotion for Christ.
The best days to visit Seville during Semana Santa is Good Friday and Easter Saturday. After these days there will be fewer people, but the spiritual atmosphere will remain.

Anastasi in Neos Kosmos, Athens is the celebration of Good Friday and the night of Holy Saturday. These dates are the most important events of Greek Orthodox Easter.
The priests of the different churches start chanting at midnight. They will chant “Christos Anesti” which means ‘Christ has risen’. While chanting, they will pass the holy light through the crowd from one devotee to the other.
One of the most spectacular celebrations is the Anastasi in Neos Kosmos, Athens. There will be Molotovs, fireworks, and fire at the midnight mass. This will all take place outside the church of Analipseos in the neighborhood Neos Kosmos. Local people will set off fireworks and Molotov cocktails and light up the streets.
