This feast, officially called Festa de São João do Porto, is dedicated to Saint John the Baptist. The fireworks and bonfires were initially performed to worship the sun, a reference to the pagan roots of the fest.

Festa de São João do Porto is always held in the middle of summer when the time is right to gather with friends and family in the alfresco restaurants.
